A new Measurement Patterns Guideline

The versatility of the COSMIC method in being able to measure sizes of software from different functional domains, as seen by different types of users and at different levels of decomposition is a great advantage over other FSM methods. However this flexibility also means one must take great care when publishing a measurement to ensure it is very well defined so that it can be compared validly with other measurements (i.e. to ensure apple versus apple comparisons) and be used consistently in the future for performance comparisons, estimating, etc.

A COSMIC size measurement is defined by agreeing certain parameters during the Measurement Strategy phase of the measurement process. Experience shows that various patterns of parameters are recurrently used. The Measurement Practices Committee therefore decided that it would be helpful to publish a Guideline that defines a few standard measurement patterns for various types of business application, real-time and infrastructure software. We hope you find this Guideline helpful and welcome any feedback.Go to Top of Page
